"Momentum" is many people moving toward a goal.
We help citizens' movements by building the teams, developing the strategies, and spreading the know-how needed to win a just, free and habitable world.
We accelerate and stabilize movements
Our approach: scalable planning, counterfactual thinking, empowering like crazy, and learning from history.
Scaling up effective cooperation
The change we need will not happen inside movements, but outside of them: adoption by the mainstream. Outward-facing work must grow to societal dimensions, but scaling up always takes first steps that don't scale: empowering others to make good decisions, investing in skills, and building tools and systems. We take those steps with a long-term plan and learning loops in mind.
Counterfactuals: We ask "what happens if we don't?"
The very best things we could spend our time on are often many times better than other "good" options. And it may often happen that if we do not take a certain action, someone else will take it instead. Since we want to add something instead of just displacing others, we are willing to not take a great opportunity if we are confident that the important work will be done by others. We think critically about how replaceable we would be, and conversely, we are always on the lookout for the most impactful work that would not happen without us.
All day every day, making ourselves superfluous
We empower others with all the tools and know-how we have, e.g. in agile internal structures, communicating with other citizens, knowing one's political system, doing press work, and thinking long-term. It's always best if tomorrow, we are not needed anymore and can go help elsewhere...
History: Learning from the mistakes and successes of others
Movements seem to come out of nowhere. But scholars observe that their success depends on a number of typical ingredients and conditions. We study the research and first-hand historical accounts to see how to communicate and organize to successfully change society - and help modern-day movements apply the insights.
We are pretty booked right now, but...
We read all our emails, but currently, we cannot respond to most inquiries because we would not be able to get important work done. In the meantime, we ask that you only contact us if you are looking to advise or give to high-impact advocacy. We hope you understand, and we will let you know if the situation changes.
